Later, outside, Jamie approaches Ian, who's watching Young Ian endure his punishment: rolling animal feces for fuel. You could’ve taught Young Ian the printing trade, not how to be a criminal." Jamie assures Jenny he cares for Young Ian like his own son. Jamie tries to defend his livelihood again: "You do not complain when I send you money every month, and you know fine well it doesn’t come from printing copies of the psalms." Jenny fires back: "I ken how you make your money, but that’s you, brother. Jenny is furious, kicking Ian out of the room and turning on Claire: "You killed a man in front of my boy?" Claire tries to defend herself, promising it was in self-defense and there's more to the story, but Jenny scoffs: "Maybe we should all gather 'round the fire if we’re to listen to a tall tale." It's not clear why Claire doesn't tell Jenny about trying to save the man, but perhaps she simply doesn't want to discuss it. Jamie explains the drama with Sir Percival, and Young Ian (again, he is a moron) chimes in that Claire killed the man who threatened her. "Just dropped back into our lives after 20 years as if nothing has changed." There it is. And with a stray," Jenny says, turning to Claire. "So that’s why you’re home, tail dragging. Jamie explains there was a "wee fire" at the print shop, but they both see right through him. Young Ian explains he was earning money and getting good at it, telling his parents, rather stupidly, "I sold 20 casks of brandy before we were forced to flee after the fire." This inflames Jenny and Ian, who turn on Jamie for putting their son in danger. In the house, Ian reproaches Jamie for lying about Young Ian's whereabouts. Claire wants to say more to her sister-in-law, but Jenny isn't making the time for her. She hugs Young Ian, then smacks him upside the head and goes into the house. She's not going to let Claire get away with this slight on her family, but she's not quite ready to address it yet. "Here you are," Jenny responds, not impressed. "Never thought I’d see you grace my front step again,” Jenny concedes. Jenny, like Ian last week, can hardly believe her eyes, while Claire smiles sheepishly. In the yard, Jenny and Claire stare each other down awkwardly. "It didn’t appear that anything had changed, but somehow, nothing felt the same.” Jamie looks guilty, while Young Ian is terrified at the prospect of facing his mother again. “It was home once," she says in voiceover. ![]() Claire is both excited and anxious to be back. The episode opens with Claire, Jamie and Young Ian riding up the road to Lallybroch. Here's everything we learned from Outlander Season 3 Episode 8, "First Wife." 1) Claire and Jamie take Young Ian to Lallybroch-and Jenny doesn't hide her contempt for Claire. Laura Donnelly (Jenny) and Steven Cree (Ian) are criminally underused on Outlander, but "First Wife" took the time to explore their complicated feelings about Claire's return. Though last week felt like a bit of slump, this week's episode, "First Wife," brought humor and horror in equal parts while hearkening back to the excellent Lallybroch-set episodes of Season 1. But because this is Outlander, the drama doesn't end there, as a pistol, pirates, and long-lost treasure further complicate Claire and Jamie's future. And when Claire finally does discover Jamie's secret-not only is he married, but to a woman who tried to kill Claire years ago-it makes for one hell of an argument. But first, Claire had to face her steely sister-in-law, Jenny, who's none to pleased about 20 years of silence from the long-lost Mistress Fraser. At the start of tonight's episode, Claire doesn't know that yet, but Jamie's bombshell set up the reunited lovers for an explosive battle when the truth finally came out. Last week's Outlander introduced a complication to Claire and Jamie's happily ever after, with the quiet revelation that Jamie has another wife. ![]()
